Verstappen pole, Alonso on front row. F1 Canadian GP 2022 Qualifying Review & Results

In a brilliant qualifying session for the Canadian GP, Max Verstappen managed to put his Red Bull on pole. In what could be a great race considering where some drivers are, this has a lot of potential.

With rain earlier before qualifying, the wets were the tyres of use for Q1. Everyone came out on track to get times in.

Mercedes goes quickest early, George Russell ahead of Lewis Hamilton, the times kept getting quicker with Pierre Gasly and Esteban Ocon getting in the top five. Kevin Magnussen went quickest halfway through the session, Valtteri Bottas then beat that.

Russell, Hamilton, and Verstappen went top three quickest, which Fernando Alonso then beat, which Carlos Sainz followed up by going quicker.

With around 3 minutes to go Sergio Perez, Alex Albon, Yuki Tsunoda, Lance Stroll and Nicholas Latifi were the ones in the elimination zone, Sebastian Vettel was just ahead of them all.

Perez then got himself into twelfth, Albon thirteenth, Vettel only sixteenth, which soon became seventeenth after Gasly beat him by going sixteenth. Tsunoda was also eliminated, qualified last with Latifi just ahead in nineteenth.

Drivers eliminated in Q1 were Tsunoda, Latifi, Stroll, Vettel and Gasly.

In Q2 the track was drying out a little bit which meant the track was suitable for intermediate tyres. Alonso, Magnussen, Ocon, Schumacher and Albon started off Q2 on inters while everyone else stayed with the wets. Sainz and Perez came out for a lap before switching to inters.

Mercedes goes quickest with Zhou and Albon behind, Alonso and Bottas top the Mercedes, Verstappen second with Ocon just behind and Sainz into third.

Perez crashed into the wall off turn 3, he was not able to get the car out and a red flag was called.

With 8 minutes to go the session restarted with Magnussen going quickest, Albon just behind, both Mercedes tops them, then Verstappen beats them all going quickest. Alonso went second behind him.

Quickfire laps were coming in thick and fast at this point, Magnussen went second, Bottas eighth. Zhou up to fifth with the track getting dryer.

Alonso then goes third behind Sainz, Zhou up to fourth with Hamilton just behind. Russell then goes second with Verstappen going even faster up top. Ricciardo went sixth who was then beaten by Ocon. Bottas takes fifth with Magnussen up to fourth. Zhou then grabbed fifth again.

Schumacher up in third while Ricciardo slotted in just behind. Then Alonso went quickest, Magnussen getting fifth, which was taken away by Zhou again. Russell up to second and team-mate Hamilton in fourth. Ricciardo went ninth, who then was beaten by Ocon to ninth. Bottas just missed out, qualifying in eleventh.

The drivers eliminated in Q2 were Charles Leclerc and Lando Norris, who both did not set a lap. The others being Perez, Bottas and Albon.

Q3 was less chaotic, Hamilton set the pace while Russell then beat his time. Schumacher and Magnussen go third and fourth, Zhou behind them. Sainz got into second just ahead of Alonso in third. Ocon went into eighth and Ricciardo went slowest in tenth.

With the last of the laps taking place Schumacher put in a great lap getting up to second, Zhou up to eighth with Sainz going second.

George Russell decided to take the gamble onto slick tyres and that ended up not working out as he spun out at turn 2, it was still too wet for slick tyres.

Magnussen got up to third, which Hamilton followed up by getting himself into second. Verstappen then extended the advantage he had going faster. Sainz missed out on pole going second only to be denied by Alonso with a fantastic lap. Hamilton dropped to fourth and the Haas duo qualifying fifth and sixth in a great performance. Ocon, Russell, Ricciardo and Zhou rounded out the top ten for qualifying.

With Leclerc having a 10-place grid penalty, he will be starting at the back of the grid, so the question is can he come back from the back to claw back some ground in the championship? Perez is another one that will have to make his way up the order throughout the race. Could Alonso get the jump on Verstappen and take the lead into turn 1? The first Canadian GP since 2019 is shaping up to be an exciting one.
